Atlanta suspect Kwame Shabazz charged with rape and sexual battery across multiple incidents
Atlanta police have arrested 31-year-old Kwame Shabazz in connection with a series of sexual assault cases across the city, cbsnews.com reports. The arrest followed an extensive investigation that included community tips prompted by the release of surveillance images.
Shabazz was taken into custody by the Atlanta Police Department's Special Victims Unit alongside the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
On 22 January, Shabazz gained entry to an apartment complex on the 700 block of Cosmopolitan Drive, according to the Atlanta Police Department. He forced his way into a stranger's unit while the resident was attempting to take out her rubbish, and sexually assaulted her. The victim contacted 911 immediately after the incident and has cooperated with investigators throughout the case.
The following day, police say Shabazz exposed himself to a woman on the 2200 block of Piedmont Road. Investigators later linked him to the theft of an e-bike in late October.
Authorities had previously described Shabazz as a "dangerous person on the streets of Atlanta." He faces an existing warrant for rape out of College Park, as well as a probation warrant in Fulton County.
In Atlanta, Shabazz now faces charges of rape, sexual battery, aggravated sexual battery, false imprisonment, hindering a person making an emergency call, burglary, and aggravated assault.
The Atlanta Police Department thanked the public for their assistance and said further updates would be provided as the case moves through the legal system.
