The Fairfield Police Department confirmed in a statement posted to social media that the shooting "stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect" inside the store. All seven individuals sustained gunshot wounds; at least three of the surviving six were in critical condition and taken to hospital for treatment.

Detectives were actively interviewing witnesses in the hours after the incident. "This is still a very active crime scene. Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting," the department's statement read.

The FBI's Sacramento field office said on X that it was deploying its evidence response team to assist Fairfield police with the investigation.

Solano Town Center, which houses 130 stores and restaurants, remained open on Saturday but cancelled its scheduled Halloween trick-or-treating event. "In light of last night's event, we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time," the mall said in a statement.

Fairfield is located approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Sacramento.
