Two children found dead at Mendocino County home in suspected murder-suicide
A 44-year-old man is believed to have killed his two children — a 14-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy — before taking his own life at a property on the 6300 block of Old River Road, approximately eight miles south of Ukiah, California. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office announced the findings on Saturday, as reported by abc7news.com.
The incident was discovered on Friday morning after a 911 call was transferred from the California Highway Patrol at around 10:20 a.m. The caller reported two children in need of medical assistance at the residence.
"Initial evidence and interviews indicate the adult male killed the two children and then committed suicide at the residence," said Captain Quincy Cromer in a press release.
People present at the property placed the children in a vehicle and drove north along Old River Road to meet emergency medical crews near the Mendocino County Office of Education, just south of Talmage Road. Both children were unresponsive and had no pulses upon arrival. Paramedics and first responders performed CPR and advanced lifesaving measures on both children, but were unable to revive them.
Officers who proceeded to the house subsequently found the father dead at the scene.
The names of all three victims have been withheld — the father's pending notification of next of kin, and the children's due to their ages.
Law enforcement from across the county, alongside medics and firefighters, responded to the Old River Road address. Sheriff's Office chaplains were dispatched to support family members and first responders.
"Investigators are still conducting interviews and gathering evidence related to this investigation, but a possible motive is not being released at this stage of the investigation," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Cromer confirmed there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the wider community.
Autopsies for the children and their father have been scheduled. The official cause and manner of death are yet to be formally determined.
