Orangeburg County mother faces child neglect charge over severely malnourished daughter

A South Carolina mother has been arrested after her 12-year-old daughter was discovered in a state of severe malnutrition, wcax.com reports.

Chiquitta Dawkins, 43, of Orangeburg County, has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, according to deputies.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said officers were called to a location in Bowman, where they found the girl in a critical condition. The child weighed just 47 pounds, walked with a limp and had severely frail bones, according to the arrest warrant.

Investigators also established that no educational records existed for the child beyond kindergarten, an incident report states.

Ravenell condemned the situation in unambiguous terms. "There are no reasonable people on this planet who could possibly think this is fine," he said. "Leaving a child to become this sick, this malnourished is the utmost in despicable."
