Five dead in Mundelein home after welfare check, two handguns recovered
Five adults were found dead inside a residential property in north suburban Mundelein, Illinois, following a welfare check late Sunday night, nbcchicago.com reports. A death investigation is now underway, with yellow police tape surrounding the home.
At approximately 11:45 p.m., officers from the Mundelein Police Department responded to a well-being check at an address in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue. Upon entering the property, they discovered three men and two women dead inside.
The Lake County Coroner's Office said all five adults appeared to have died as a result of gunshot wounds. Two handguns were recovered at the scene.
Authorities indicated the victims appeared to be family members or in a domestic relationship with one another.
Footage and images captured overnight showed officers and law enforcement officials moving in and out of the home, located at the corner of Prairie and Wellington avenues. Evidence technicians from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force were also present alongside Mundelein police vehicles.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office noted that the major crimes task force is deployed to incidents including homicides, suspicious deaths, in-custody deaths, officer-involved shootings, and what it describes as "heinous crimes" within Lake County communities.
Police said the incident appeared to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. By early Monday morning, officers were seen blocking off the property and a nearby parked vehicle.
The investigation remains active, led jointly by the Mundelein Police Department, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, and the Lake County Coroner's Office. Autopsies were scheduled for Monday afternoon, according to the coroner's office.
No further details have been released.
