Eight Charged in Queens Drug and Gun Trafficking Bust Sparked by Jamaica Park Violence

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced charges against eight men following an 18-month investigation into a drug and gun trafficking operation centred on Rufus King Park in Jamaica, Queens, according to queensda.org. Three of the defendants face charges as major drug traffickers, and seized narcotics carry a combined street value exceeding $1 million.

"We allege these men were significant drug and gun traffickers who were a grave threat to public safety as peddlers of death and addiction," DA Katz said. "We will hold accountable anyone threatening the safety of our neighbourhoods."

The investigation, conducted jointly with the NYPD, involved a long-term wiretap authorised by Katz's office. Intercepted communications showed defendants openly discussing their illegal activities, giving investigators grounds to obtain search warrants for residences on 85th Street in Brooklyn, 161st Street in Jamaica, Queens, and Acre Lane in Hicksville.

Raids on those properties produced:

Undercover agents also made 40 separate purchases of cocaine and ecstasy from at least one defendant, and bought five handguns over the course of the investigation, carried out by Katz's office alongside the NYPD's Queens South Violent Crime Squad.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said the case reflected the department's core public-safety priorities. "The defendants in this case showed a callous disregard for human life, and we will never waver in our efforts to hold them — and anyone else who threatens the people we serve — fully accountable," Sewell said. She also thanked the New York State Police and Nassau County Police Department for their assistance.

Jose Escobar, 26, of Brook Avenue in the Bronx, has been indicted on conspiracy charges in the second and fourth degrees, along with multiple counts of criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance across the third and fifth degrees.

Five additional men were charged in connection with the operation. DA Katz's office credited undercover officers for their role in building the case and extended thanks to the New York State Police and Nassau County Police for supporting the joint effort.
