Florida Mother Charged With Child Neglect After Leaving Four Children Home Alone During Las Vegas Trip
A 50-year-old mother from Kissimmee, Florida, was arrested at Orlando International Airport on four counts of child neglect after her four children were left home alone for several days while she travelled to Las Vegas for work, abc7.com reports.
The Osceola County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at approximately 8:30 p.m. on 21 October from a child reporting that her nine-year-old brother had been struck on the head by a dumbbell. Deputies arrived at the home to find no adults present and four children — aged 14, 12, 11, and 9 — unsupervised.
Emergency responders transported the injured nine-year-old to Celebration Hospital, where he was later treated and released.
Deputies contacted the children's mother, identified as Irene Miller, who told them she was working in Las Vegas and was not scheduled to return until 23 October. Investigators determined she had departed on 18 October.
Miller told authorities she had arranged for a babysitter to travel from Tampa each morning to help the children get ready for school and to check on them during the day. However, she confirmed the babysitter was not required to stay overnight, leaving the children alone each night.
The children's father was subsequently contacted and agreed to take them into his care.
Detectives with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office coordinated with airport authorities to intercept Miller upon her arrival. She was taken into custody as she stepped off her flight from Las Vegas at Orlando International Airport that Friday.
Miller was charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and booked at the Orange County jail.
