Ski-masked attacker stabs man on northbound 6 train in Manhattan
A 40-year-old homeless man was stabbed multiple times aboard a northbound 6 train in Manhattan shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, police said, as reported by abc7ny.com. The suspect, described as wearing a ski mask, fled the station and has not been apprehended.
The victim was discovered when the train pulled into the Astor Place station at Lafayette Street in the East Village. A bystander called 911, and the attacker ran from the platform. The victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
MTA cameras installed on every subway car may provide investigators with a lead on the suspect's identity, police noted.
Bystanders near the scene expressed concern. "It's really sad and scary," said Nancy Bissmeyer, visiting from Indianapolis. "I try not to ride in the middle of the night so I don't know if that helps at all."
Joseph Phillips, a resident of the East Village, called the incident "wild," and pointed to broader urban pressures. "It's always going to be arguments. The city can stress people out — especially if you're unhoused, that's a big issue as well," Phillips said. He also raised mental health as a contributing factor. "Mental health is a tackle. People really don't want to talk about the issues at hand and it just leads to hostile environments for the rest of us," he added.
Ella Bardo, also visiting from Indiana, said the incident felt like part of a pattern. "It's kind of to be expected these days unfortunately," Bardo said, adding that she would like to see stronger prosecution of crime in New York.
The stabbing comes against a backdrop of rising subway crime. Major crime across the New York City subway system is up 1.6% so far this year, driven by felony assaults and nonviolent grand larcenies, according to the NYPD. Felony assaults on the subway are up 12% and misdemeanor assaults up 16% compared to the same period last year. Six subway murders have been recorded so far this year, compared with four over the same stretch in the prior year.
The masked suspect remains at large.
