A man was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon following a police chase that began in Port Washington and ended outside the Americana Mall in Manhasset, abc7ny.com reports.

The incident started at around 12:30 p.m. when officers stopped a man driving a stolen vehicle on Main Street in Port Washington. The suspect abandoned that car, got into a stolen Mercedes, and drove off at speed.

During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly turned onto a side street and drove directly toward an officer. At that point, sources say, one shot was fired by police. No one was struck.

The chase ended when the suspect attempted to flee on foot near the Americana Manhasset shopping centre. Officers surrounded him approximately 100 feet into a parking lot, where he was detained.

Nassau County Police Department Chief of Department Christopher Ferro confirmed the arrest at the scene. "The individual fled the scene causing multiple vehicle accidents, which culminated into the accident we see behind here at Americana Mall," Ferro said. "That individual was responsible for this accident, multiple accidents, was apprehended, and is in custody. There is currently no threat to the community."

According to Nassau County Police, the suspect caused several collisions during the chase.

As a precaution, Paul D. Schreiber High School and Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School were briefly placed on lockout for approximately 15 minutes. The measure was lifted at 1 p.m.

Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect.
