Female suspect surrenders after car standoff outside Charleston middle school

A multijurisdictional police chase concluded in a short standoff in downtown Charleston on Friday morning, prompting a brief lockdown of Simmons-Pinckney Middle School and temporary road closures on the crosstown, live5news.com reports.

Charleston Police Sgt. Daniel Wilson said Charleston Police assisted the North Charleston Police Department with the pursuit, which originated in NCPD's jurisdiction before ending near the middle school.

The female suspect briefly barricaded herself inside her vehicle before surrendering without incident, according to North Charleston Police Public Information Officer Harve Jacobs. She was subsequently taken into NCPD custody.

Wilson confirmed the school was placed on lockdown and that several surrounding streets, along with the crosstown, were closed to traffic while officers worked to resolve the situation. By 8:40 a.m., the standoff had ended safely with no injuries reported.

Wilson stated there was no ongoing danger to the public and that officers were in the process of clearing the scene and reopening roads.

The North Charleston Police Department said it would release further details as they become available. No charges have been confirmed at this stage.
