Sandy officer shot four times during deadly domestic dispute standoff
A Sandy police sergeant was shot four times during an exchange of gunfire with a man accused of killing three people in a domestic dispute on 31 May, katu.com reports. The Sandy Police Department confirmed Tuesday that Sgt. Garrett Thornton remained hospitalised but was expected to move to a rehabilitation facility shortly.
"His recovery journey will be long, but he continues to demonstrate the courage and determination that have defined his service to our community," the department said in a Facebook post.
Thornton has begun both physical and occupational therapies, and the department said it was optimistic about his progress.
"Like many of you, we are proud of Sergeant Thornton's willingness to move toward danger to protect others. We stand with him throughout his recovery and look forward to the day he rejoins us in uniform," the department added.
Three killed, officer wounded in Sandy shooting
Police say Bryan Andrew Moore, 38, shot and killed 37-year-old Jenna Mary Overson, 70-year-old Mary Beth Overson and 16-year-old Kobyn McClure before wounding Thornton. Officers were called to a home on Evans Street near Ross Avenue in Sandy at around 4 p.m. on Sunday, 31 May, following a reported domestic dispute. Upon arrival, they came under fire.
Moore eventually surrendered. According to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office, McClure was shot at a nearby home and had no known prior relationship with Moore.
During the standoff, Moore's 3-year-old son and Jenna Overson's 20-year-old son from a previous relationship were inside the house with Moore. Neither was injured.
Charges and legal proceedings
An indictment document issued on Monday, 1 June, identified Moore as the suspect. He faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of the three victims, as well as attempted aggravated murder and first-degree assault for the shooting of Thornton. Additional charges related to the incident have also been filed.
Moore is currently held at the Clackamas County jail without bail.
A grand jury determined that officers were justified under Oregon law for shooting at Moore during the confrontation.
How to support Sergeant Thornton
The Sandy Police Department says those wishing to support Thornton's family can donate through Clackamas County Bank. A GoFundMe fundraiser has also been set up by his brother, Brandon.
