Gunshot wounds outside OSU dormitory after off-campus party
Three people, including one Oklahoma State University student, were injured in a shooting at the university's main campus in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in the early hours of Sunday morning, nbcnews.com reports.
OSU police were called to Carreker East, a three-storey residential hall, at around 3:40 a.m. after victims turned up at off-campus locations and reported the incident.
According to police, a large party had been held at the Payne County Expo Center earlier that night. When it ended at around 2:30 a.m., a group moved onto campus to continue the gathering. Shots were fired outside Carreker East following what police described as "a disagreement between individuals."
Officers from both the university and Stillwater police departments arrived within minutes and secured the scene. "The suspect is no longer on campus," police said. "As the event happened, all parties left campus."
The OSU student — who was struck in the abdomen — was taken first to Stillwater Medical Center before being airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where they remain in stable condition. A second victim was also flown to OU Medical Center and is in stable condition. The third victim was treated at hospital and subsequently discharged.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the campus and characterised the incident as isolated. Residents not living in Carreker East were asked to avoid the area. Anyone with information has been urged to contact police.
The investigation is being led by the OSU police department, with assistance from Stillwater police, the Payne County Sheriff's Office, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, which is helping to process evidence.
The shooting is the latest in a series of gun violence incidents at American universities and schools over the past week. In Mississippi, ten people were killed across Leland, Heidelberg, Alcorn State University, and Jackson State University during homecoming celebrations. On 4 October, South Carolina State University was placed on lockdown after one person was killed and two others were injured in two separate, unrelated shootings on campus.
