Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns After Failed Execution
Frank Strada, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, is resigning three days after the botched lethal injection of death-row inmate Christa Pike. Governor Bill Lee announced the decision, and Strada is expected to leave office before the end of October, the New York Times reported, according to 24.hu.
The procedure was the second attempted lethal injection in Tennessee this year that ended in failure. Following the incident, politicians from both the Republican and Democratic parties demanded Strada’s removal, prompting the state to suspend all executions.
Pike was scheduled to be the first woman put to death in Tennessee in 200 years. She survived several administrations of pentobarbital and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition afterward. Her lawyer said staff inserted at least seven needles into her left arm during the attempt; one needle bent after an unsuccessful try and was pulled back out.
Medical professionals continued to treat Pike in the hours that followed. The state has paused capital punishments while officials review the circumstances.
