Dallas cold case cracked: arrest made 30 years after 1993 murder

Dallas police have arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with the 1993 murder of Tommie Davis, after renewed forensic testing identified a suspect, fox4news.com reports.

Gary Len Ross was taken into custody on Friday and charged with capital murder.

Davis, 55, was found dead inside her home on Haskell Avenue on 18 May 1993. According to police, she had been beaten with a board and slashed with a knife. At the time, investigators had little to work with — damage to the front door and several missing items were the only leads.

Detectives reopened the case more than three decades later. A re-examination of the crime scene revealed that blood found on a wall inside the home did not belong to Davis. The blood was matched to a person named Tommy Lynn Jones, which investigators determined was an alias used by Ross.

Major Bobbie Epperson of the Dallas Police Department's CAPERS Unit credited the breakthrough to detective work. "Detective Isom's meticulous and persistent work exemplifies the dedication of our CAPERS Unit," Epperson said. "We hope this arrest brings a measure of closure to Ms. Davis's family and serves as a reminder that justice will always be pursued."

Epperson added that the department remains committed to pursuing justice "no matter how much time has passed."
