Tampa man charged with first-degree murder after neighbour tips off detectives
Tampa police have arrested Michael Knobloch, 36, in connection with a fatal shooting on Nebraska Avenue last month, fox13news.com reports. A neighbour identified Knobloch from flyers distributed by detectives during a door-to-door canvass near the scene, shortly after which Knobloch turned himself in to Orient Road Jail.
The shooting occurred on 22 September on Nebraska Avenue near McEwen Avenue in the North Tampa area, according to the Tampa Police Department. Officers responding to the scene found a Black man in his early 60s with a gunshot wound and provided life-saving care before Tampa Fire and Rescue transported him to hospital. The man died four days later, on 26 September.
Earlier this week, police reclassified the death investigation as a homicide. On Friday, TPD detectives launched a neighbourhood canvass and went door-to-door distributing flyers carrying pictures of the suspect. During that canvass, a resident identified the man in the photographs as Knobloch. Shortly afterward, Knobloch surrendered to authorities at Orient Road Jail.
Acting Tampa Police Chief Brett Owen praised both his detectives and the public for their roles in the arrest. "I want to commend the work of our detectives who remained committed to getting justice for the victim's family," Owen said. "Information provided by members of our community helped detectives identify the suspect, and we are grateful to everyone who assisted with this investigation. While nothing can bring their loved one back, we hope this arrest brings some sense of accountability as they grieve this loss."
Knobloch faces a charge of first-degree premeditated murder involving a firearm resulting in great bodily harm or death.
Police have not released the victim's name and have not disclosed a possible motive. It remains unclear whether Knobloch and the victim knew each other. The investigation remains active, and the Tampa Police Department said additional updates will be provided as they become available.
