Niagara Regional Police said officers were dispatched just after 6:30 p.m. to a home on Fares Street, north of Rodney Street, following a report of a shooting. Paramedics arrived alongside officers to find a male with what police described in a news release as "an injury consistent with a gun shot."

The victim was transported to hospital, where he subsequently died. Police have not disclosed his age, and his identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The police service's emergency task unit secured the scene before detectives from the homicide and forensic services units took over the investigation. The Fares Street property remains secured to allow that analysis to continue.

The identity of the arrested 30-year-old Port Colborne resident has not been released, as investigators are still determining what charges to lay. Detectives believe the incident was isolated and have stated there is no ongoing risk to public safety.
