Argentine teachers strike and march demanding justice for Nancy Godoy
The Confederation of Education Workers of the Argentine Republic (CTERA) held a national teachers' strike and day of mourning with mobilisations throughout the country on Thursday 29 October, according to information from suteba.org.ar. The industrial action followed the murder of Nancy Estela Godoy, a rural teacher in the province of Corrientes.
In Buenos Aires, the confederation gathered outside the House of the Province of Corrientes alongside trade union and educational organisations. The main demand focused on clarifying the crime and establishing all responsibilities.
Sonia Alesso, General Secretary of CTERA, spoke during the event and conveyed the pain and outrage of Argentina's teaching profession as a whole. Alesso reaffirmed the demand for justice and called on the State to guarantee decent and safe working conditions for all education workers, with particular emphasis on those working in rural schools.
María Laura Torre, General Secretary of SUTEBA, and Antonella Bianco, Gender Secretary of UTE, also spoke, adding their voices to the call for justice for Godoy.
Throughout the country, CTERA's grassroots organisations held days of mourning, events, open radio sessions and various protest actions. The mobilisations expressed support for Nancy's family, the educational community and the grassroots union SUTECO.
The confederation directed appeals to both the Corrientes provincial government and the national government to assume their corresponding responsibilities in the face of the precarious conditions, isolation and lack of protection in which numerous teachers carry out their work. "We cannot allow teaching to mean putting one's life at risk," they stated in a statement.
CTERA demanded an exhaustive, transparent and timely investigation, and insisted that Nancy Godoy's murder not go unpunished. The strike and mobilisations, according to the organisation, express the firm determination of Argentina's teaching profession not to remain silent.
