CTERA declares national strike following discovery of teacher Nancy Godoy's body
The Confederation of Education Workers of the Argentine Republic (CTERA) called for a national day of mourning and teacher strike action across all levels of education following the discovery of the lifeless body of Nancy Godoy, a rural teacher from Corrientes who had been missing for more than 20 days. According to argentina.indymedia.org, five people are in custody in connection with the incident.
The body was found in a wetland area of Esquina Department, a few kilometres from the rural school where Godoy worked as deputy principal.
CTERA General Secretary Sonia Alesso expressed the sector's grief and demanded justice for the crime. "A rural teacher has been murdered, while carrying out her work," Alesso stated, also calling on educational communities, families and social organisations to join the protest action.
In Corrientes, demonstrations will take place in public squares throughout the province starting at 18:00, calling for justice for Godoy.
Alesso recalled that the teacher had reported the precarious working conditions she found when assuming her position at the school. The union leader pointed out that thousands of rural teachers must travel long distances and difficult roads to reach their workplaces, and described the murder as an unacceptable event for the educational community.
"For us, for CTERA, for the teachers, for the educators, death is a limit, we have said this repeatedly," stated the general secretary.
Alesso also linked the call for justice to the fight against femicide and expressed the union's solidarity with educators in Corrientes, particularly members of the Single Union of Education Workers of Corrientes (SUTECO).
The national call aims to bring visibility to the crime and support the demands of Godoy's colleagues, whilst the judicial investigation advances to determine responsibilities. Alesso also questioned the lack of calls for wage negotiations and the reduction in educational funding, factors which, she stated, worsen the conditions in which teachers work throughout the country.
