Suspect in Buenos Aires homicide arrested in Santiago del Estero

Police in Santiago del Estero arrested a man with an active arrest warrant issued by the Buenos Aires courts, accused of having killed Sergio Daniel Lucero, 38, on 17 September in the town of Tortuguitas, according to infodelestero.com.

The operation was carried out by personnel from the Fugitives Search and Capture Division, under the General Investigations Directorate, after gathering sufficient evidence to execute the judicial measure.

Investigators located the suspect while he was travelling on public roads near Calle Japón, in the Inmigrantes neighbourhood of the capital city. He was arrested there and transferred to police headquarters.

According to the investigation, the victim had gone to the home of the now-detained man to demand payment of a debt related to a money loan. The encounter led to an argument that escalated into violence, at which point the suspect allegedly fired a firearm, causing Lucero's death. After the incident occurred, he fled.

Since then, the courts and security forces sought to establish his whereabouts. Investigative work made it possible to determine that the fugitive was in Santiago del Estero territory: he had apparently arrived last weekend to meet with his father, who lives in that province, and from there planned to travel into the interior of the province to evade capture.

Surveillance operations managed to locate him before he could carry out that escape. The detainee was placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities, while arrangements are being made for his transfer to Buenos Aires Province for the continuation of proceedings.
