Cyberattack on Delhaize, Carrefour and Spar refrigerators: return to normal

Delhaize and other chains targeted by hacking of their refrigeration systems

Delhaize stores hit on Monday by a computer attack on their refrigeration facilities are now fully operational again, a spokesperson for the chain told the Belga news agency on Tuesday morning. Supplies are proceeding normally, he added.

According to DHnet, the refrigeration and freezing systems of dozens of Belgian supermarkets were disrupted on Monday by a computer incident. Delhaize, Carrefour and Spar are among the chains affected. In several stores, the temperature of the fridges and freezers rose abruptly to around 15 degrees.

Hackers reportedly activated the defrost mode of the evaporators remotely, causing the equipment to warm up. Refrigeration systems installer Sabcobel has established a direct link with the large-scale cyberattack that had targeted hundreds of shops in France in early October: the mechanism used appears to be identical.
