Twelve years in prison for Nicolas Ullens following the murder of Myriam Lechien

The Walloon Brabant assize court handed down a sentence of 12 years' imprisonment on Wednesday against Nicolas Ullens, found guilty of the murder of his mother-in-law Myriam Lechien, reports parismatch.be. The accused appeared in court as a free person at this trial.

Advocate general Laure Wynants had requested a sentence of 25 years in the morning and called for the immediate arrest of the accused. The defence for its part argued for a sentence of five years with a suspended sentence, in order to avoid a return to detention.

On 29 March 2023, Myriam Lechien had been shot dead with six bullets in Ohain, in the municipality of Lasne. Nicolas Ullens acknowledged the facts, but contested any premeditation. It was precisely on this point that the trial had crystallised: the defence argued for murder, whilst the public prosecutor and the civil parties supported the qualification of assassination.

On 6 October, the jurors had upheld premeditation. The proceedings on sentencing had then been suspended for nearly a month following a request for the disqualification of the magistrates, before resuming on Wednesday morning. The court and jury withdrew to deliberate around 11.00.
