Four years in prison for driver who hit and killed police officer on Northern Tangent
Sofia City Court has sentenced Miroslav Vasilev to four years' imprisonment for the death of a police officer in a crash on the Northern Expressway Tangent.

Sofia City Court (SCC) found Miroslav Vasilev guilty of the 2025 crash on the Northern Expressway Tangent in which a police officer died, according to 24 Chasa.
Judge Maria Kavrakova imposed a sentence of six years' imprisonment, which was subsequently reduced to four years, as the defendant admitted guilt and the case proceeded via expedited judicial investigation. The sentence will be served under general regime conditions.
In addition to the imprisonment, the court stripped Vasilev of the right to drive a motor vehicle for a period of six years.
According to the court's findings, the defendant violated traffic rules and was driving at excessive speed at the moment of impact with the police vehicle. The collision directly caused the death of the law enforcement officer.
In determining the sentence, the court took into account as mitigating circumstances Vasilev's clean criminal record and the remorse he expressed. In April, he had already admitted guilt during a preparatory hearing at SCC, according to BTA.
The sentence is not final and is subject to appeal to the Court of Appeals — Sofia.
