Sofia City Court has ordered the detention of a Chinese national, whom prosecutors accuse of espionage. The information was announced by the press centre of the General Prosecutor's Office, reported by БНР Новини.
According to the prosecution's evidence, between July 2025 and 18 June 2026 in the capital Sofia, the defendant attempted to obtain information constituting a state secret. His intention was to pass it to a foreign state. However, the action remained incomplete for reasons beyond his control.
The prosecution initiated the preliminary investigation on 18 June, following a notification from the State Agency "National Security". On 21 June the court delivered its decision.
The judicial panel accepted the prosecutor's arguments that there was sufficient evidence of a reasonable presumption of authorship of the crime. The judges also concluded that there was a genuine risk that the defendant would abscond from justice. For this reason, the most severe measure of compulsion—detention in custody—was determined to be the most appropriate in this case.
The court's decision is subject to appeal to a higher instance.
