Man shoots himself during police check on Danube Bridge, border officer wounded
A 61-year-old man died after shooting himself in the head during a check at Danube Bridge near Ruse. A border police officer was also wounded.
Danube Bridge incident: man dies during resistance to border police
The District Prosecutor's Office in Ruse is investigating the death of a 61-year-old man who died following a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during a border check. The incident occurred near Danube Bridge at Ruse at around 18:00 on Wednesday evening, according to Deputy District Prosecutor and Spokesperson Miroslav Marinov, cited by 24 Chasova.
A team of border police stopped a light vehicle with Bulgarian registration plates for inspection. The vehicle was driven by 37-year-old E.D., and the passenger was 61-year-old T.D. Officers requested identity documents from both men, vehicle documents, and access to their belongings.
T.D. got out of the vehicle and opened the boot. Police officers noticed an object in his bag that resembled a short firearm. When they attempted to isolate him and deny him access to the boot, the man resisted. During the resistance, he managed to obtain the weapon, fired a shot, and shot himself in the head. He died at the scene.
One of the border police officers was also injured by the shot — the officer sustained injuries to his arm.
An investigation was opened immediately. An investigator from the District Investigation Department in Ruse is working on the case under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office. Inspection and search of the vehicle and the crime scene were carried out, all identified witnesses were questioned, and necessary expert examinations have been appointed in the case, Marinov said, citing the BTA.
