Gerasimov's death raises questions; investigation launched
Sofia District Prosecution has opened a pre-trial proceeding in connection with the death of 61-year-old prosecutor Georgi Gerasimov, seconded to the Supreme Cassation Prosecution, according to Novinite.com. The evidence gathered so far does not indicate involvement by a third party.
The proceeding is on suspicion of an offence under article 127, paragraph 1 of Bulgaria's Penal Code, which provides for deprivation of liberty from one to six years for anyone who assists or incites another person to commit suicide if it is carried out or attempted.
Shortly before the Prosecution released its official statement, newspaper "24 Hours" reported that Gerasimov died by suicide using a legally owned firearm.
Sofia District Prosecution confirmed that the death occurred on 23 October 2026 and that a firearm which the prosecutor legally possessed was used. Investigators are continuing to clarify all circumstances of the case.
According to unconfirmed information, Gerasimov's son found him after going to look for him — the prosecutor had not been answering calls from his wife. She in turn contacted his colleagues after being unable to reach him by telephone.
There is no evidence that Gerasimov suffered from a serious illness. His colleagues stated that his death was not connected to the procedure for selecting members of the new Supreme Judicial Council.
