Prosecutor's son faces new potential charge — attempted murder of police officer
The 22-year-old Vasil Mikhailov — known as the "prosecutor's son" because his father is magistrate Bisser Mikhailov from Pernik — is on his way to facing a charge of attempted murder of a police officer. This became clear from a detailed report published by the prosecution, according to 24 Hours.
Under the direction of the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office, an investigation is underway into the attempted murder of a police officer and his father in the village of Lyulin near Pernik, committed on 25 March 2026. In this case, a 22-year-old man has already been named as an accused, and a preventive measure of "detention in custody" has been imposed on him. The investigation into Mikhailov's potential involvement in the crime is continuing, the state prosecution states.
Mikhailov was arrested on Friday evening in the capital's "Svoboda" neighbourhood after being in hiding from the courts for more than a year. On Saturday, he was taken to Sofia Prison to serve one of the sentences already imposed on him.
Final conviction in force
Mikhailov currently has one final conviction, formed after consolidating sentences from two pre-trial proceedings.
The first case was initiated following an incident on 12 May 2022 near a children's playground in Pernik — threatening with murder and causing minor bodily injury on grounds of hooliganism. The case was initially filed in the Pernik District Court, but due to the disqualification of all judges, the Supreme Judicial Council referred it for hearing in the Slivnitsa District Court. Mikhailov was sentenced to one year and eight months imprisonment with a three-year probation period.
The second case was initiated on a complaint from his former girlfriend Bilyana. It covers the period from 28 October 2022 to 21 July 2023 and includes four counts of threatening with murder under conditions of a continuing crime. On 2 October 2024, the supervising prosecutor requested a sentence of five years imprisonment under strict regime. The Sofia District Court found Mikhailov guilty of one count and sentenced him to one year imprisonment with a three-year probation period. Following a protest by the Sofia District Prosecution, the Sofia City Court consolidated the two sentences and determined one overall most severe sentence — one year and eight months imprisonment for effective serving.
Pending cases
Before the Sofia City Court, a case is scheduled to be heard involving eight crimes committed by Mikhailov between 21 November 2021 and 11 June 2022 in the Pernik area. The charges include causing medium bodily injury to three persons, causing minor bodily injury on grounds of hooliganism to two persons, indecent acts grossly violating public order, and threatening with murder.
The case was assigned to the Sofia District Court following the disqualification of all Pernik judges. On 11 April 2025, the supervising prosecutor from the Sofia District Prosecution requested a sentence of eleven years and eleven months. The court found Mikhailov guilty and imposed four years imprisonment under "general regime" and public censure. Following a prosecution appeal, the case is expected to be heard before the Sofia City Court.
A separate investigation is being conducted under the supervision of the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office into coercion accompanied by a threat of murder, damage to property, attempted coercion, abduction for gain, and threatening with murder. On 28 August 2025, Mikhailov was named as an accused in four of these crimes.
Investigation continuing
The prosecution states that work on the "comprehensive clarification of Mikhailov's criminal activity" is continuing. Upon establishing possible involvement of other persons in his concealment and upon gathering sufficient evidence against them, measures will be taken to bring them to criminal liability, the prosecution states.
