Sofia City Court has ordered the detention for up to 40 days of a United Arab Emirates citizen wanted by Interpol Dubai for the execution of a sentence for abuse of trust.

Sofia City Court issued an order on 3 April for the detention for up to 40 days of a United Arab Emirates citizen. The measure was imposed at the request of Sofia City Prosecutor's Office on the basis of the Extradition Act and the European Arrest Warrant.
The man is wanted for extradition at the request of Interpol UAE – Abu Dhabi, based on a red notice issued on 1 December 2025. By a ruling of 1 April 2026, a prosecutor from the Supreme Court of Cassation ordered that the foreigner be detained for up to 72 hours.
Against him there is a national arrest warrant issued by a prosecutor in Dubai for the execution of a sentence handed down on 26 July 2017 by a court in Dubai for an offence classified as abuse of trust. The imposed sentence is six months' imprisonment and a fine of 20,737,263.37 dirhams.
The man has been prohibited from leaving Bulgaria. The judicial authorities of the UAE have declared their intention to request the subsequent extradition of the foreigner, according to a statement from Sofia City Prosecutor's Office.
According to operational data from the International Operational Cooperation Directorate at the Interior Ministry, the Arab citizen, convicted of an economic crime, has financial resources to evade justice, as he has lived in several countries on different continents.
The decision of Sofia City Court is not final and may be appealed to Sofia Court of Appeal. Appeal proceedings are scheduled for 9 April.
