Washington sanctions more than 60 Colombian and Bolivian officials with visa restrictions
The United States government revoked visas for more than 60 senior officials, functionaries and prominent figures from Colombia and Bolivia over alleged links to drug trafficking or corruption, according to eluniversal.com.mx.
In Colombia, the measure affects 21 people. Among those affected is Ricardo Roa Barragán, former president of state-owned Ecopetrol and former campaign manager of the campaign that brought leftist Gustavo Petro to the Presidency in 2022.
In Bolivia, visa restrictions affect 40 citizens. The State Department named among the sanctioned former attorney general Juan Lanchipa and the former head of anti-drug enforcement Freddy Bismarck, whom it accuses of corruption or links to drug trafficking.
The State Department stated in a statement that the measures are part of commitments made in September last year during the follow-up summit of what is called the Americas Shield. Under that agreement, Washington will impose visa restrictions on 15 current or former public officials in Bolivia, as well as on 25 direct relatives of the same.
