House arrest for prosecutor investigated for bribery in Santa Cruz
A precautionary judge granted house arrest to prosecutor Julio César Canaza Sóliz and another defendant in the case, according to El Deber. The hearing took place Friday evening, after Canaza Sóliz was detained on Wednesday in the framework of an investigation into alleged corruption offences.
The Departmental Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Cruz indicates that the official is being investigated for the alleged crime of active bribery. The Public Ministry questioned the judicial ruling and announced the filing of an appeal for a criminal court to review the measures imposed.
Among the grounds for the appeal is the alleged risk faced by one of the principal witnesses in the case.
Canaza Sóliz previously served as prosecutor in Guarayos Province, where he also allegedly faced complaints. He was subsequently transferred to Santa Cruz to continue his functions in the Public Ministry. At present, there is no information available to establish whether that background is connected to the ongoing investigation.
