Decline in violent crime in São Paulo: femicides down 19% and homicides hit record low

The city of São Paulo recorded 38 femicides between January and September 2026, against 47 in the same period of the previous year — a decrease of 19.1%, according to data released by agenciasp.sp.gov.br. In the same interval, the number of aggressors arrested for domestic violence rose 36.3%, from 2,114 to 2,881 occurrences.

Intentional homicides also declined: falling from 376 to 338 cases, a reduction of 10.1%. Armed robberies resulting in death — robberies followed by death — fell from 28 to 23 occurrences in the period, reaching the lowest indices in the historical record for the first nine months of the year.

"The reduction in femicides, homicides and armed robberies in the capital is an important result, but it does not mean we can diminish our efforts. Our commitment is to intensify the work of prevention, investigation and protection, especially so that no woman is left without support in the face of violence," said Public Security Secretary Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves.

September also shows a decline

In September 2026, femicides numbered four, compared with six in the same month of 2025. Intentional homicides fell 12% in the monthly comparison, from 50 to 44 occurrences — the second lowest historical index for the month. In the opposite direction, armed robberies rose from two to three cases in the period.

SP Life Programme guides police actions

The fight against crimes against life counts on the support of the SP Life programme, from the Public Security Secretariat, which gathers and analyses data on occurrences to identify patterns and direct investigations. The information guides preventive actions and police strategies in regions with the highest concentration of homicides and armed robberies.

Network for protection of women in the capital

The Government of São Paulo maintains a network of services that includes specialised police stations, reporting channels and initiatives for monitoring victims and aggressors. In the capital, there are nine Women's Defence Police Stations (DDMs), seven of them operating 24 hours a day. Throughout the state, there are 144 DDMs, 39 with uninterrupted service.

"The Women's Defence Police Stations play a fundamental role in this work, offering care to victims, investigating reports and requesting protective measures when necessary. Our commitment is to ensure that these women find support, safety and a network prepared to interrupt the cycle of violence," stated Police Chief Cristiane Braga, coordinator of the DDMs.

In the Military Police, the Purple Cabin offers specialised care to victims of domestic violence who call 190, with female police officers providing guidance on rights, protective measures and available support services.

The SP Safe Woman app allows registering police reports online, locating police units and activating the panic button, which simultaneously alerts the police and an emergency contact indicated by the user. The SP Safe Woman Patrol complements this system with preventive policing and monitoring of domestic violence cases, including those identified by the Purple Cabin and by the app itself.
