Plane Detained in Puerto Iguazú Opens Investigation into Brazilian Senator
Brazil's Federal Police is investigating whether Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (Liberal Party) attempted to leave the country aboard a private Argentine jet, according to lanueva.com. The aircraft involved is a Gulfstream G400, registration LV-JQW, belonging to the company Baires Fly S.A., which departed from Buenos Aires Aeroparque last Tuesday at 22:15 and landed at 23:45 at Puerto Iguazú airport, a city bordering Brazil.
The plane was scheduled to take off in the early morning hours bound for the United States, but remains detained at the Misiones airport following a series of "additional inspections", according to airport sources cited by lanueva.com. According to the flight plan presented, the aircraft was to carry four passengers, two pilots and one cabin crew member. However, problems arose regarding the identity of the travellers, leading authorities to request supplementary reports before authorising departure.
Suspicions that Flávio Bolsonaro was one of those passengers were first circulated by Brazilian newspaper O'Globo. The senator was subject to an exit ban from Brazilian territory issued by judge Alexandre de Moraes, who also ordered the seizure of his passports. Faced with the situation, the original flight plan was cancelled and the aircraft awaits at a section of Puerto Iguazú airport the resolution of its status, with the possibility of continuing the journey or returning to Buenos Aires.
According to O'Globo, Federal Police are investigating Flávio Bolsonaro for alleged money laundering and foreign currency evasion. The case links him with lawyer Willer Tomaz through shared accounts and travel records. The proceedings are conducted by judge André Mendonça, and the investigation focuses on the senator's involvement in obtaining funds—sourced from former banker Daniel Vorcaro—intended for the production of a biographical film about Jair Bolsonaro.
Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), general coordinator of Bolsonaro's presidential campaign, denied in statements to Metrópoles that the politician had left Brazil: "That did not happen". Marinho also denied for the time being that Bolsonaro's passports had been seized.
