Guilty Verdict Against Former Ski World Championships Chief in Brig

Claude-Alain Schmidhalter was found guilty of fraudulent business management by the district court in Brig on Friday, according to the Tages-Anzeiger. The court sentenced the well-known figure in the Swiss skiing world to a prison sentence of twelve months, suspended on probation for two years, as well as to a fine of 5,000 francs.

The proceedings bear no connection to Schmidhalter's activities in sport. In October, he stepped down as president of the 2027 Ski World Championships in Crans-Montana.

The public prosecutor's office had accused Schmidhalter and a former business partner of defrauding a former employee of an engineering firm in the Upper Valais of more than 300,000 francs. The prosecution had demanded 23 months imprisonment conditional, a fine of 10,000 francs and reimbursement of 55,000 francs. The defence had pleaded for acquittal.
