The court in Curaçao has sentenced W., nicknamed 'Nuto', to life imprisonment. This was reported by rtl.nl. The judge found him guilty of incitement to multiple murders and attempted murder, and ruled that life imprisonment is an "appropriate sentence".
The Public Prosecution Service had requested a life sentence and held W. responsible for involvement in more than ten murders, the smuggling of 340 kilograms of cocaine, weapons smuggling and money laundering. Not all suspicions were proven—in a number of cases, including a shooting at an airport in Curaçao in 2014, he was acquitted.
The judge established that W. acted as the instigator of the murders, initially in response to the death of his girlfriend. "You were the instigator of the murders, in response to the murder of your girlfriend," the ruling stated. "That is never a reason to go and commit murder yourself."
Even after the first murder, W. showed no remorse. "You simply continued, without any respect," the court ruled. The judge pointed out that W. himself had indicated he would "continue for years and years", and that he did not appear to be concerned that innocent victims could fall. The risk of reoffending was deemed present, and society needed to be protected against it.
The Joint Court of Justice delivered its ruling in the courtroom of the Extra Secured Institution in Vught, where W. is currently detained. His case was heard this summer at the heavily secured naval base Suffisant in Willemstad. The ruling could be followed via a livestream in the extra secured courtroom at Schiphol and in Curaçao and Sint-Maarten.
W. is considered a co-leader of the criminal organisation No Limit Soldiers, which he is said to have controlled for years together with Shurandy 'Tyson' Q. That organisation engaged in drug and weapons trafficking and murder attacks on rival gangs. W. was arrested in the Dominican Republic, where he reportedly worked as a rapper.
During the hearing of his case, W. stated that he was "no saint, but also no monster". His lawyers argued that the Public Prosecution Service had based its case primarily on hearsay.
