Officer shot robber following attempted carjacking on Caracasbaaiweg
Curacao.nu reports that police have released new details about the fatal shooting incident on Thursday evening on Caracasbaaiweg. The incident took place at 21:44 at an apartment complex — not at restaurant Popy's Place, as stated in initial reports.
A plainclothes officer was at the complex when she encountered two men. One of them pressed a firearm against her head and demanded her car keys, according to the police report.
Robbers fled on foot
The two men were unable to escape quickly enough with the vehicle and fled on foot. The officer drew her service weapon, identified herself as police, and fired warning shots.
She pursued the men and fired targeted shots. One of them fell; the other suspect managed to escape. The officer then immediately alerted the dispatch centre.
Victim died at the scene
The officer ascertained that the fallen man was seriously wounded. Ambulance personnel could do nothing more; a police physician certified his death. Police seized cartridge casings and parts of a firearm. The body was seized on the orders of the prosecutor for further investigation.
The victim support team is providing the officer with assistance following the traumatic incident. The National Detective Service has launched an investigation, which is standard when an officer uses their service weapon.
Appeal to fugitive suspect
The robbery task force is calling on the still-fugitive suspect to turn himself in before he is apprehended. According to police, he was the one who held the firearm to the officer's head.
The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released. Police are waiting until relatives have been informed, according to a spokesperson.
