A court on Monday sent solicitor Hana Suková and her daughter Pavla Marešová to prison. The older woman will serve seven years, the younger five and a half years. Both were convicted of embezzlement of financial assets that clients had entrusted to them in solicitors' client accounts.

According to the ruling, the mother and daughter appropriated a total of 161 million crowns. The court also banned both women from practising law for ten years. The case concerns the systematic withdrawal of money from client accounts which the solicitor managed for clients as part of her practice.

Hana Suková is eighty years old. Nevertheless, the court imposed an unconditional custodial sentence. Daughter Pavla Marešová featured in the case as an accomplice.

Solicitors' client accounts serve to temporarily hold money or documents with a solicitor during various legal transactions. A solicitor is required to handle them only according to the client's instructions and must not use them for their own purposes.
