Murder at reception centre: court remands accused in custody

The district court in Rychnov nad Kněžnou decided on Thursday morning to remand a 46-year-old man accused of murder in custody, according to rychnovsky.denik.cz. The man is being prosecuted for strangling his wife, which occurred on Tuesday, 20 October in the grounds of the Kostelec nad Orlicí Reception Centre. He faces up to twenty years in prison.

Police brought the accused to the courthouse on Thursday at nine o'clock in the morning. The judge granted the remand application before eleven o'clock in the morning.

"The man is now being prosecuted whilst in custody. According to his statements so far, the motive for his act was said to be disagreements relating to views on the way of life and the position of women in the family," said police spokeswoman Martina Jandová.

The married couple from the Caucasus region had a row on Wednesday afternoon in the interior of the reception centre on Red Army Avenue. The dispute ended in the woman's death. Rescue efforts by medics were in vain — police detained the man within eight minutes of a call to the emergency line.

"This is a tragic case that occurred between partners," said criminal investigator Michal Hynek on Tuesday at the entrance to the complex.

The man caused serious injuries to the woman while strangling her. "She subsequently lost consciousness and despite intensive attempts to save her, she could not be revived," described police spokeswoman Karolína Hynková.

The Kostelec nad Orlicí Reception Centre serves to accommodate applicants for international protection who have completed the entry procedures at the receiving centre. The Ministry of Interior established the facility in 2001.
