The regional court began hearing a case on Wednesday in which a man is accused of entering a residential building with an axe in December of last year in the Praha-východ district and attacking a man who was living with his ex-partner. The state prosecutor is pursuing the man for attempted murder with intent, which carries a potential sentence of up to twenty years in prison. According to the case file, the defendant first sent the woman a series of threatening messages in which he promised he would hack her new boyfriend to pieces if she did not end the relationship with him. He then went to her house, where he attempted to gain entry through a window into a garden shed in which the couple were staying, carrying the tool in his hand.
The woman's partner defended himself with a baseball bat, but was unable to prevent entry. Inside, the attacker swung an axe at his opponent's head. The man managed to raise his arm, so the blow struck his hand instead of his skull. When the victim tried to hide behind the door, the aggressor continued the attack. He only retreated when a police unit arrived. During the final stages of the incident, minors were in the vicinity, according to the charges.
In court, the defendant admitted he had behaved aggressively and dangerously, but denied that he wanted to kill anyone. "It is fabricated," he stated. His defence counsel said that her client drove to the woman only to persuade her to return to him. According to her, the injuries occurred whilst he was forcing his way past the man through the door, not as a result of a targeted blow. The court will continue proceedings in this matter at a further hearing.
