The Regional Court in Ústí nad Labem today handed down final sentences, reducing penalties for two men involved in extensive fraud in the issuance of driving licences in Varnsdorf in the Děčín district.
The court imposed a five-year prison sentence on test examiner Radek Šampalík instead of the original seven years handed down by the court of first instance. Interpreter Georgesi Mango's custodial sentence was reduced from the original four years to three years. The appellate court's decision is now final.
The case concerned the systematic abuse of driving tests to obtain driving privileges. The test examiner, together with the translator, illegally enabled more than seven hundred people to obtain a driving licence. Police drew attention to the unusual activity in 2019, when the transport ministry noticed that in Varnsdorf, a town of fifteen thousand, the same number of applicants were sitting tests as in Ústí nad Labem, a city of one hundred thousand.
