Several people were injured in an attack on a secondary school in southern Bavaria on Wednesday. German police announced that a suspect has been arrested.
The arrested person is a 16-year-old youth, as police authorities stated following the incident at the Bavarian gymnasium. On the social network X, local police confirmed: "The suspected perpetrator has been arrested."
The incident occurred at the Welfen Gymnasium in Sonthofen, a town north of the Alps. Officers called on residents to avoid the area around the school. "A large-scale police operation is underway," investigators had warned earlier. "We are on site with strong forces," police said further.
The exact number of injured and the severity of injuries are currently being determined. "The number of victims and the severity of injuries are currently being established," authorities stated.
Serious violent incidents at German schools are rare, but not an unknown phenomenon. Last year, a 17-year-old seriously injured a 45-year-old teacher at a vocational school in Essen in the west of the country; before the arrest, police shot at the youth. In 2002, a 19-year-old armed attacker killed 16 people, including 12 teachers and two students, at a school in Erfurt in eastern Germany.
