16-year-old attacks schoolgirls – two girls seriously injured

A 16-year-old boy seriously injured at least two girls on Wednesday afternoon at the Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau. Police treat the incident as a violent crime and arrested the suspected perpetrator at the scene, as the authorities announced via the short messaging service X.

The two injured schoolgirls were taken to hospital. According to police, their condition is not life-threatening. It remained initially unclear whether further persons were injured.

The arrested person is a 16-year-old boy, according to dpa. He is reported to have been carrying both a knife and a firearm. Investigators suspect that he acted alone. The exact circumstances of the incident remain unknown.

Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told dpa that he suspected the boy may have been a former pupil of the school – this has not been confirmed so far, however. Herrmann also announced that the suspect had previously undergone psychiatric treatment. Police are also investigating whether there is a connection between the boy and the two injured girls.

The alerted police deployed a larger contingent. An information and assembly point was set up at a nearby fire station for parents of the schoolchildren.
