A 16-year-old teenager who seriously injured two 13-year-old girls with a knife on Wednesday at a gymnasium in Schongau has been remanded in custody. He is suspected of, among other things, attempted murder in two cases.

A 16-year-old teenager who seriously injured two 13-year-old girls with a knife on Wednesday at the grounds of a gymnasium in the Bavarian town of Schongau has been remanded in custody. According to police and the state prosecutor's office, he is suspected of attempted murder in two cases, among other charges, the news agency DPA reported on Thursday.
The accused, a young Croatian, was undergoing psychiatric treatment. Security authorities were already familiar with him – the Munich state prosecutor's office had been investigating him over two incidents from 2025, including alleged threats against fellow students and the glorification of school rampages on social networks. However, according to police and the state prosecutor's office, there were no grounds for arrest at that time.
Two teachers overpowered the attacker whilst pupils immediately came to the aid of the seriously injured girls. "One of the girls would very probably have bled to death if they had not done so. They probably saved her life," Bavarian school minister Anna Stolz told DPA. "In my view, these are true heroes." The pupils applied pressure bandages made from their t-shirts to the wounded.
Police officers and teachers overpowered the perpetrator, who was carrying a pistol in addition to the knife. Officers seized the knife, the firearm and ammunition. Investigators are examining whether the pistol, from which the suspect fired and which subsequently jammed, was manufactured using a 3D printer.
Schongau is a town with approximately 13,000 inhabitants in southern Bavaria near the Austrian border. In Bavaria, the school year is still in progress, with holidays not beginning until August.
