Two 13-year-old schoolgirls were seriously injured in a knife attack at a school in Bavaria. A 16-year-old Croatian national, who had previously attended the school in Schongau himself, is being held responsible for the attack last Wednesday.
The Bavarian authority for combating terrorism and extremism has taken over the investigation, as announced on Tuesday. This means the incident has been classified as a terrorist attack. The Munich Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting investigations into two counts of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. This authority takes on cases in which there is suspicion of a threat to the constitutional order.
According to findings by German media, several texts were found that are allegedly written by the accused. In these writings, perpetrators of similar acts are glorified and hatred is spread against members of other nations and religions. Some reports indicate that the texts also contain incitement against homosexuals, Muslims and women. The teenager allegedly glorified the massacre in a mosque in New Zealand in 2019, among other things.
The authorities had the 16-year-old in their sights last year after he had threatened a similar attack. When the accused was apprehended, he was carrying a pistol in addition to the knife, though the weapon did not function during the incident.
The young man lived together with his parents south-west of Munich and had previously received psychiatric treatment, as the Bavarian Interior Ministry stated.
