Two 13-year-old girls were seriously injured in a knife attack at Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau. A 16-year-old Croatian national was arrested.

Two 13-year-old girls suffered serious injuries on Wednesday at around 12.50 p.m. in a knife attack at Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau in Bavaria. Police arrested a 16-year-old suspect. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann confirmed that the arrested person is a Croatian national.
According to a police spokesperson, both injured schoolgirls are no longer in critical condition. According to initial findings, the victims are pupils at the affected school. The incident occurred partly on school premises and partly in the immediate vicinity.
Police and emergency services received the emergency call at around 12.50 p.m. After the attack, police deployed a large contingent and advised citizens to avoid the school area. A support and information centre was set up at the fire station for parents and family members of pupils.
Herrmann stated in response to an inquiry from news agency dpa: "The suspect is a Croatian national and lived with his parents." He added that the teenager had previously undergone psychiatric treatment. The minister declined to confirm whether he is a former pupil of Schongau gymnasium. It also remains unclear whether the 16-year-old was currently enrolled at the school and whether there was any acquaintance relationship between him and the victims.
According to Herrmann, there are indications that the suspect had previously drawn attention due to threats of violence. The minister also confirmed that the suspect carried a firearm in addition to a knife. "We assume that there was one perpetrator who was carrying a knife and a firearm," Herrmann said at the edge of a CSU state group meeting at Chiemsee. The firearm was initially not found, but ammunition was, as reported by German Press Agency dpa. Herrmann stressed that according to current knowledge, no second perpetrator was involved. Rumours of a possible further attacker could not be substantiated with credible evidence.
The investigating authorities are continuing to clarify all circumstances of the attack.
