A 16-year-old teenager attacked a school in Schongau in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau on Wednesday. Two 13-year-old schoolgirls were severely injured in the incident. According to police, both victims are no longer in danger of their lives.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced at a press conference that the suspect is a former pupil of the school. The young man, who has been receiving medical treatment, is an EU national and not a refugee.
Investigators are treating the incident as what is known as an "amok attack". "We continue to assume that this is an extraordinary mental health situation," Dobrindt explained. It is expected to be a lone attacker with no accomplices or links to any organisation.
The Interior Minister described the course of events: the teenager initially approached the school armed with a firearm. He fired several shots without hitting anyone, as the weapon subsequently stopped functioning. He then drew a knife and rushed at the two girls, who appear to have been selected at random.
Thanks to the swift intervention of teachers and the police who were called, the attacker was overpowered. Officers were at the scene immediately.
Germany has experienced several attacks on schools and markets in recent years that have traumatised the country. The most recent incident of this kind at an educational institution occurred in September 2025 in Essen, when a 17-year-old severely injured a 45-year-old teacher with a knife.
