81-year-old confesses to murder and rape of US tourist over 30 years ago
An 81-year-old pensioner has admitted before a German court to the rape and murder of a 24-year-old US tourist in Koblenz in 1994.

In September 1994, a then 49-year-old man lured the 24-year-old US tourist Amy Lopez to a secluded location at the Ehrenbreitstein fortress in Koblenz. There he bound the woman, brutally raped her and killed her. Children playing at the location discovered the body shortly afterwards.
The case remained unsolved for a long time. Only new methods of DNA analysis led investigators to the 81-year-old. The German, who lives in a care home, has been held in custody since February. He appeared in court with a walking frame. His defence counsel stated that the defendant confesses fully to the deed. A verdict could be delivered in early September.
