At Welfen-Gymnasium in the Upper Bavarian small town of Schongau, approximately 70 kilometres south-west of Munich, an attacker seriously injured several people. Police have already arrested the suspected perpetrator, with investigations ongoing.
The emergency call came in at 12:50 on weekday during school hours to the local police. According to a police spokesman, more than 15 patrol cars were dispatched to the town. As Index reported, the newspaper Bild learned of several seriously injured persons.
Authorities stated that several victims with stab wounds were taken to hospital. The background to the attack remains unclear. According to initial information, the attacker struck partly on the school grounds and partly in the immediate vicinity. The suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly afterwards – police also deployed a helicopter in the operation.
Authorities initially reported four injured, but could not yet confirm this figure. It is also unclear how many students and teachers are among the injured. The public was asked to avoid the area around the gymnasium for the time being. A collection point for parents of students was set up at a nearby fire station.
