During an attack at the Welfen-Gymnasium in Bavaria's Würmtal on Wednesday, 8 July, several people were injured. Bavarian police confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and called on the public to avoid the area.
"We currently know that several people have been injured at the Welfen-Gymnasium," police stated on X. "A suspect has been arrested." The exact number of those affected and the extent of their injuries remain to be clarified, it was added.
Police initially made no statement on the nature of the attack. News agency AFP attempted unsuccessfully to contact Bavarian authorities.
A point of contact for relatives of gymnasium and secondary school pupils was set up at a fire station in the municipality, which is located less than 100 kilometres south-west of Munich.
Germany has experienced several attacks on schools and public places over recent years, which have deeply shaken the country. The latest school incident occurred in November 2025 in Essen, when a 17-year-old Kosovar seriously injured a 45-year-old teacher, allegedly motivated by jihadist ideology. A man on the street and a primary school caretaker were also attacked.
