Attack on Grammar School in Bavaria: Several Pupils Seriously Injured
An armed teenager attacked several people at a grammar school in Schongau in western Bavaria on Wednesday afternoon. At least four girls suffered serious injuries. Police were informed of the incident shortly before 12:50 p.m. The suspected perpetrator initially fled but was apprehended shortly afterwards. A helicopter was deployed during the search.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) stated that the attacker was carrying not only a knife but also a firearm. Rumours of an accomplice were not confirmed – the perpetrator acted alone. He had received psychiatric treatment in the past. Whether there was a personal relationship between the perpetrator and the injured girls or whether they were random victims is still under investigation.
According to an informant quoted by the newspaper Bild, the injured pupils are no longer in danger of their lives. Whether the young man attacked former classmates or chose the location at random remains unclear.
The perpetrator holds Croatian citizenship and lived with his parents. Schongau is a small town with more than 12,000 residents on the banks of the Lech river in Upper Bavaria.
