Attack on gymnasium in Bavaria: several injured, 16-year-old arrested
At least two girls were severely injured in an attack on a gymnasium in Schongau in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau on Wednesday. Police did not rule out further injuries. The perpetrator, a 16-year-old teenager, was arrested whilst fleeing.
The incident occurred partly on school grounds and partly outside the area. Whether the injured girls and the suspected attacker are pupils at the affected school remained unclear initially. The exact circumstances of the incident are still the subject of investigation.
Police initially reported up to ten injured, later specifying their figures to at least two severely injured girls. Authorities initially made no statements about the nature of the injuries or the weapon used. News magazine Bild reported, citing its own sources, of at least four severely injured.
A helicopter was also deployed during the police operation. Schongau is a town with around 13,000 residents in southern Bavaria near the Austrian border. The school year in Bavaria is still ongoing, with summer holidays beginning only in August.
Germany has experienced several attacks on schools in recent years. Last September, a young Kosovar attacked a teacher at a secondary school in Essen, a school employee at another school, and a random passer-by. Investigators are assuming an Islamist motive. Also last year, a former schoolmate in Bavaria attacked two 14-year-old boys with a hammer.
