In an attack on a gymnasium in Schongau in Bavaria, at least two pupils were seriously injured. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested.

In an attack on a gymnasium in Schongau in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau, several people were injured on Wednesday. Police stated that at least two girls suffered serious injuries. Whether further people were injured remained initially unclear.
Emergency services were alerted at around 12:50 p.m. The incident occurred partly on the school grounds and partly in the immediate vicinity of the educational establishment. A 16-year-old youth, regarded as a suspect, initially fled the school but was apprehended by police a short time later. A helicopter was deployed in the search operation.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) stated that the attacker was armed not only with a knife but also with a firearm. There were no indications of accomplices—the perpetrator acted alone. The youth had previously been in psychiatric treatment. Whether there was a pre-existing relationship between the injured girls and the perpetrator or whether they were random victims remained initially a subject of investigation.
According to a report in the tabloid newspaper Bild, the injured pupils are now out of danger to life. Whether the victims and the alleged perpetrator were pupils of the affected school could not initially be stated with certainty by police.
The suspect is a Croatian national and lived with his parents in the region. Schongau is a small town with approximately 13,000 inhabitants on the River Lech in western Upper Bavaria, close to the border with Austria.
Germany has experienced several attacks on schools in recent years. In September of the previous year, a young Kosovar in Essen attacked a teacher at a secondary school, a pupil at another establishment, and a passer-by. Investigators assume an Islamist motive. Also in the previous year, a former classmate in Bavaria attacked two 14-year-old boys with a hammer.
